Unpaid Internships

I have been looking for Graphic Design internships for a long time now. I have applied to various studios and have received no replies. I know, in this economy, that it is hard to find any jobs…but this fad with unpaid internships is becoming ridiculous. Why would I want to work a full work week and not earn a dime? This Philosophy reminds me of what my parents used to tell me as a kid, “Work hard and learn for the experience.” I am an avid believer in working your hardest but there is so much spirit you can put in your work when you are not recognized for your achievements. Also, there are so many companies now that hire students for no pay and then, when they graduate, drop them. There is no longer that security that most people had when they worked at an internship.

I was lucky to get myself an internship with the government but it is paid. I would love to work at a Graphic Design studio and earn the big bucks but that is just not going to happen anytime soon. To one day open my own studio has been a dream of mine since I was a little child. The dream of showing my work to the world is slowly falling through my hands and I have to except this as a fact of life.

Well, I guess it won’t matter if the world is going to end in 2012 lol If you have any questions on this subject or would like to submit your thoughts, just comment!

  1. I first came across the concept of non-paid internships in the film “The Pursuit of Happyness”. I could not then, or now, believe that such a practice could exist. In Australia, and I suspect many other countries, that practice is against the law. I know none of that helps you with your dream but keep at it – a door will eventually open for you.

  2. Non-Paid Internships run rapid in the States….most internships for college students are not paid. I didn’t know that it was such a rare thing. The States always seem to do things that the world would never even consider.

    Thank you for your comment.

  4. “Life” is an “unpaid internship” LOL! Have you thought of selling your photography on sites like Etsy or Artfire? You can also follow those sites on twitter, many “media arts” “sellers” on those sites on twitter as well. You will run across them once you begin looking for them. People who sell handmade goods also look for graphic designers to design their storefronts on those sites. If you do as well as you d on this blog page, hey..you can start making some extra side income..that’s how it starts. I also work for the gov. Montg county.I’m an RN. I sell antiques on Go Antiques. Used to be an Ebay seller. Bah! no good any more! LOL!
