When I was on the way home last night, I saw this amazing sunset. I never have my cell phone in the front seat so I threw the car in park and scrambled to get the phone and take the photo before the red light turned green. I’m super excited about this photo and hope you like it!

Hi Everybody!

Here is a shot of the inside of the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. The inside is a spectacular 18-story glass atrium with sweeping views of the Potomac River, Washington, DC and Old Town Alexandria.

I am looking forward to my stay in mid-Feb and be able to setup my photo shoots.

Hi!

I went to the National Harbor today because it was so nice. Only 58 degrees. This photo is the Gaylord Hotel and Conference Center. I also wanted to do a recon because I will be attending Katsucon this year and wanted to make sure I re-familiarized myself with the area.

I’ll post a Blog update on my Katsucon Schedule later this week.

This photo is the face of a rather huge sculpture that is located at the National Harbor Beach. If you’ve been there before, you may not be aware that there is a rather interesting history behind the sculpture.

The Statue is called “The Awakening” and was created by J. Seward Johnson Jr. He is an American artist known for his trompe l’oeil painted bronze statues.

He is best known for his life-size bronze statues, which actually are castings of living people of all ages depicting them engaged in day-to-day activities.

“The Awakening” was originally installed at Hains Point in Washington, D.C. in 1980 for the International Sculpture Conference Exhibition. Although its National Park Service “temporary permit” had long expired, the statue remained for 27 years at the southern end of Hains Point, across the Potomac River from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The Statue was positioned in a large, flat, open field.

In 2007, the National Park Service announced that the sculpture would be moved to the National Harbor, after the artist sold the statue for $750,000. The sculpture was excavated and removed from Hains Point on February 20, 2008, and then was installed at National Harbor in a configuration to correct scale issues that existed in the original sculpture.

Pretty cool, don’t you think?

Sometimes you are at the right place at the right time.

This photo was taken last year while trying to get around a severe traffic jam in DC. If you live in the DC area, I know you understand how horrible the traffic can be.

I just happened to look out the window while stuck at a traffic light and saw the scene that you see.

I will be attending a convention at the National Harbor, in February, and wanted to post a photo that I took there last year.

What you are looking at is the inside of the Gaylord! The Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center is a large hotel and convention center located in National Harbor, Maryland. It is the largest non-gaming hotel and convention center on the East Coast of the United States. It cost $870 million to build!

Pretty cool, huh? If you ever get a chance to go to the National Harbor, check the Gaylord out. I go there all the time to take photos. It’s absolutely beautiful in the spring and summer. In the winter, they have special ice shows that are sponsored by major movie studios. Last year, Dreamworks sponsored the show.

This photo was taken last year when I was flying to one of my business trips. One of the greatest parts of my job is that I get to travel a lot.

Plane windows are always so dirty so I hate taking pics through it. I was happy with this photo because I was able to catch the last moment when the sun was about the sleep for the night and the photo didn’t look like a mess.

I thought I’d change things up with the photos so you don’t have to see snow everyday. I took this photo awhile back in Washington DC. I was with some friends, giving them a tour since I’ve lived in this area for more than half my life, and of course it was raining. I always end up on tours when it rains.

This particular photo was taken at the Vietnam Memorial Wall where there are a total of 58,267 names of men and women who were killed or remain missing in action written on the gabbro walls. In case you don’t know, gabbro refers to a large group of dark, coarse-grained, intrusive mafic igneous rocks chemically equivalent to basal.

Well, the rain was coming down pretty hard and I was ready to leave when this child pulls away from his mother to check out the wall for himself. He carefully walked up to the wall and stared at it for a moment. The way he reflected on the wall was haunting. I was able to snap a quick shot before his mother called him back to the group. I remember hearing him ask his mother “Are they all dead?” The mother just nodded and they walked away.

This scene has always stuck with me because I am a military brat. Both my parents served in the Air Force and my grandfathers were also in the military and so forth. You could say that the military runs through my veins. People sometimes just go to this memorials to see what all the fuss is about but I wonder…how many people ask “Are they all dead?” War is a sad and necessary evil sometimes. Let’s not forget that we are here today, living the lives we live, because men and women died for this freedom!
